James Tolkan, the character actor best known for his role as the stern headmaster in Back to the Future, has died at the age of 94. Tolkan passed away on Friday at his home in Lake Placid, New York, according to Bob Gale, co-creator of the film, who confirmed the news to media outlets. His representative, John Alcantar, described him as “a beloved professional who lived a good, full life”. No cause of death has been disclosed.

He was widely recognised for portraying the strict and uncompromising Mr Strickland, headmaster of Hill Valley High School, who frequently reprimanded Marty McFly for being a “slacker” in the 1985 science fiction classic directed by Robert Zemeckis. Tolkan reprised the role in Back to the Future Part II (1989) and returned once more in Back to the Future Part III (1990), in which he also appeared as the character’s ancestor.
Beyond that franchise, Tolkan appeared in a range of notable films, including Top Gun, where he played the authoritative Commander Stinger, often at odds with Tom Cruise’s character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Born in Michigan in 1931, Tolkan served in the United States Navy during the Korean War before pursuing acting. He later studied drama at the University of Iowa and trained at New York’s renowned Actors Studio, where he worked under influential tutors such as Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg. His early career was rooted in theatre, including involvement in the original ensemble cast of Glengarry Glen Ross, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Mamet.
Tolkan went on to build a varied film career, with appearances in Serpico and Prince of the City, both directed by Sidney Lumet, as well as WarGames and Love and Death, in which he portrayed Napoleon. He is survived by his wife, Parmelee, to whom he had been married for 54 years.
