The observer identified the bird as a female sparrowhawk, noting that it had just captured its prey. Sparrowhawks are commonly found across the United Kingdom and Ireland, often frequenting urban and suburban areas where smaller birds are abundant.
The species previously experienced a significant population decline during the mid-20th century. According to the British Trust for Ornithology, this was largely due to the widespread use of organochlorine pesticides, which affected reproduction by weakening eggshells.
