The theme of this year’s Met Gala, regarded as one of the most prominent events in the global fashion calendar, has been announced as “Fashion is Art”. The annual fundraising gala takes place on the first Monday in May in New York and supports the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event will be co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour, according to a museum spokesman. Each year, Wintour selects a group of high-profile figures to help introduce the museum’s spring exhibition, with several figures from music, film and fashion also expected to take part.
This year’s gala will be held on 4 May, while the accompanying exhibition, Costume Art, will open to the public on 10 May. Organisers said the dress code encourages guests to interpret fashion as an art form and to reflect on how clothing has been represented throughout art history. Proceeds from the event provide the Costume Institute with its principal source of annual funding.

The exhibition will also mark the opening of new galleries at the museum. The Met’s chief executive, Max Hollein, said the show would place fashion in dialogue with artworks spanning more than 5,000 years, highlighting both historical themes and contemporary perspectives. He added that the project reflects the institution’s ongoing commitment to presenting fashion within a broader artistic and cultural context.
