Steve Coogan has suggested that being highly focused is often central to achieving success, even if it comes at a personal cost. Speaking about his latest film Saipan, the actor discussed the mindset of individuals who prioritise results over popularity, describing such intensity as a driving force behind major achievements.

In the film, Coogan portrays former Republic of Ireland football manager Mick McCarthy, whose relationship with captain Roy Keane famously broke down ahead of the 2002 World Cup. Reflecting on the dispute, Coogan noted that Keane appeared unconcerned with being liked, instead concentrating solely on fulfilling his professional objectives, a quality he described as “laser-focused”.
The actor also observed that individuals who reach exceptional heights often sacrifice balance in other areas of their lives. He suggested that expecting someone with a singular drive for excellence to be entirely well-rounded is unrealistic, as that determination can override other personal considerations.

Eanna Hardwicke, who plays Keane in the film, described the challenge of portraying the footballer’s uncompromising standards. While acknowledging the power of such ambition, he stressed that high expectations do not justify poor behaviour, adding that modern working environments require greater compromise, even while valuing discipline and a commitment to excellence.
