Lorraine Kelly, who hosts her own ITV breakfast programme, said her father’s death had come as a shock despite his poor health. In a statement shared on Saturday, she paid tribute to the man who encouraged her curiosity from a young age and played a formative role in her life. She said he bought her a telescope when she was five, watched the moon landings with her and inspired her lifelong interest in the world around her.

Kelly added that she and her brother, Graham, were focused on supporting their mother during what she described as a deeply distressing time. She asked for privacy for her family as they come to terms with their loss, saying they would miss their father greatly.
