Eric Dane was unable to attend an awards ceremony in Pasadena, California, due to what organisers described as the “physical realities” of living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The 53-year-old actor, who was due to appear at the ALS Network’s Champions for Cures and Care Gala, withdrew on medical grounds related to the progressive neurological condition, also known in the UK as motor neurone disease.

A spokesperson for the ALS Network said Dane had hoped to attend the event to accept the Advocate of the Year Award, but was not well enough to do so. The award recognises his efforts in raising international awareness of ALS and his advocacy for those affected by the disease. Broadway performer Aaron Lazar accepted the honour on his behalf during the ceremony.
Dane has previously spoken publicly about the significance of the recognition, describing it as a reflection of the strength and resilience of the ALS community. The actor, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has continued to engage with advocacy work despite the physical challenges posed by the condition.

The actor has also announced plans to publish a memoir titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, due for release in 2026. In statements about the project, Dane said the book aims to reflect on meaningful experiences throughout his life, with the intention of encouraging readers to reflect on their own. A specific publication date has not yet been confirmed.
