Donald Trump has publicly criticised both the NFL’s revised kickoff rule and the decision not to induct Bill Belichick into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot. Writing on his Truth Social platform, the former US president described the kickoff change as “unwatchable” and linked it to what he called flawed thinking behind Belichick’s exclusion.

Belichick, the former New England Patriots head coach and current North Carolina coach, became eligible for the Hall of Fame this year but failed to secure enough votes. Despite winning six Super Bowls as a head coach and two more as an assistant, reports suggest that controversies such as Spygate and Deflategate influenced voters’ decisions.
Trump and Belichick have maintained a public connection for several years. In 2016, Belichick wrote a supportive letter to Trump during his first presidential campaign, praising his resilience and leadership, which Trump later read aloud at a campaign rally.

The debate around Hall of Fame recognition also extends to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has been overlooked multiple times despite his team’s sustained success. Former players, including Julian Edelman, have recently argued that Kraft’s record of reaching multiple Super Bowls with different coaches and quarterbacks merits induction.
