Under the new system, users will be required to confirm they are aged 18 or over before accessing specific services or carrying out particular account actions. Verification can be completed through the device’s settings by linking a credit card or scanning official identification. For long-standing account holders, Apple may rely on existing payment details already associated with their accounts.

In addition to these checks, the company has confirmed that enhanced safety features will be automatically enabled for users under 18, as well as for those who have not verified their age. These include web content filters and communication safety tools designed to limit exposure to inappropriate material. The safeguards, built into Apple’s operating system, can restrict access to certain websites across both Safari and third-party browsers. They also provide warnings when users send or receive images or videos that may contain nudity.

The move has been welcomed by Ofcom, which described the decision as a positive step for online safety. While such measures are not currently mandated under the Online Safety Act, the regulator said Apple’s approach demonstrates how companies can take proactive steps to protect younger users.

Ofcom added that its regulatory framework is intended to encourage innovation in age assurance technologies, while strengthening protections against harmful content online. The introduction of these features is expected to complement broader efforts to improve digital safety, particularly for children and families across the UK.
