Solskjaer returns to UEFA observer role as Manchester United debate continues

Date:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to resume his duties as a UEFA technical observer, returning to match analysis after pausing the role during his spell in charge of Beşiktaş in 2025. His return will begin with Liverpool’s Champions League fixture against Qarabag, a match carrying significance for the English side as they seek automatic qualification for the last 16 amid continued pressure on head coach Arne Slot.

UEFA regularly appoints experienced managers without club commitments as technical observers, tasking them with producing public reports on tactical trends and match developments. Solskjaer has been part of this rotating panel since leaving Manchester United in 2021, joining other former managers such as Ange Postecoglou, who recently praised Arsenal’s performance against Inter following their Champions League victory.

Solskjaer has also remained in contact with Manchester United during Michael Carrick’s current tenure as head coach. Carrick, who was appointed instead of Solskjaer on a permanent basis, has overseen notable wins against Manchester City and Arsenal. He confirmed that Solskjaer has offered his support, describing their relationship as close and longstanding, while stressing that the former United manager remains available should advice be needed.

Despite recent results, debate continues over Carrick’s long-term suitability for the role. Pundits including Roy Keane and Gary Neville have questioned whether he has the experience required to restore United to title contention, suggesting a more established manager may ultimately be needed. Others, including Rio Ferdinand, have strongly defended Carrick’s impact, arguing that early success against elite opposition warrants greater backing and respect.
