Paul Giamatti has said he never truly expected to appear in the Star Trek universe, despite being a long-standing fan of the franchise. The 58-year-old actor stars as Nus Braka, a half-Klingon pirate, in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a role he has described as a personal highlight.

In interviews, Giamatti explained that although he had openly expressed his admiration for Star Trek over the years, he did not believe it would translate into an on-screen opportunity. He characterised the experience as exceptional, noting that it remains difficult to surpass in his career and still feels somewhat unreal.
The actor also addressed criticism sometimes directed at the franchise, rejecting distinctions between so-called high and low culture. He praised Star Trek for its intelligence, strong writing and compelling storytelling, suggesting these qualities are what ultimately matter in television and film.

Reflecting on his childhood, Giamatti recalled developing an early fascination with the series, particularly the character of Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy. He added that, even from a young age, he felt more naturally aligned with the temperament of Klingons than Vulcans, an observation that now seems fitting given his latest role.
