Manchester United turn to Michael Carrick as interim solution

Date:

Manchester United are set to appoint Michael Carrick as their new interim manager this week following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. The club opted for a short-term appointment until the end of the current campaign, with Carrick emerging as the preferred candidate ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Carrick and Solskjaer previously worked closely together during the Norwegian’s spell in charge at Old Trafford, before both left the club in 2021. Carrick later took temporary charge of United, overseeing a brief but steady spell that included two wins and a draw.

Reports suggest Carrick’s appointment was backed by Sir Alex Ferguson, with the former midfielder identified as the leading contender earlier this week. During his playing career, Carrick made 464 appearances for United, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

Since leaving Old Trafford, Carrick managed Middlesbrough, guiding them to the Championship play-offs in his first season before being dismissed last year. In the interim, Darren Fletcher has overseen first-team duties, drawing with Burnley before an FA Cup defeat to Brighton, but United now appear ready to hand Carrick the reins once again.
