Arsenal style debate after Brighton victory

Date:

Arsenal’s recent 1-0 victory away at Brighton & Hove Albion has sparked debate about the team’s playing style, after former manager Alan Pardew suggested their performances may lack aesthetic appeal. Speaking on talkSPORT, Pardew argued that the club’s pragmatic approach to winning matches might warrant “an asterisk” in the history books. He described the team as professional, strong and efficient, but said their displays were “functional” rather than beautiful.

The remarks prompted a sharp response from broadcaster and Arsenal supporter Laura Woods, who criticised the comments as disrespectful. During a call to talkSPORT, Woods questioned why Arsenal’s effective use of set pieces and tactical discipline should diminish their achievements. She argued that the criticism overlooked how teams evolve when adapting to the demands of modern football.

Woods also highlighted the contrast between past and present narratives surrounding the club. In earlier seasons, Arsenal were often praised for attractive football but criticised for failing to secure results. Now that the team is winning matches through a variety of methods, she suggested some observers appear dissatisfied with the shift towards a more results-focused style.

Despite the debate, Arsenal remain in a strong position in the Premier League title race. The club sits on 67 points from 30 matches, holding a seven-point lead over Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Attention now turns to upcoming fixtures, including an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Mansfield Town and a UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Bayer Leverkusen.
