Costco trials rapid pre-scan checkout to cut queue times

Date:

Costco is trialling a new checkout system that could allow some shoppers to complete purchases in as little as eight seconds. The pilot introduces a “pre-scan” process, where employees scan customers’ items while they are still waiting in line, according to Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip. This approach is designed to reduce delays and make transactions more efficient.

During the trial, staff use handheld devices to scan every item in a customer’s trolley before they reach the register. By the time the shopper scans their membership card, all items are already entered into the system, leaving only a quick payment step. The process is similar to fast-food drive-thrus, which take orders ahead of peak-hour queues to keep service moving.

Early results indicate that the system is easing congestion and improving customer satisfaction. Millerchip noted that enhancements in mobile wallets, pharmacy pay-ahead, and employee pre-scan technology are helping to speed up checkout and increase staff productivity. Automated pay stations are also being tested to further reduce transaction times.

In addition, Costco is piloting a “Scan & Go” feature, allowing customers to scan items with the mobile app as they shop and present a QR code at the exit for verification. By combining employee-assisted scanning with self-checkout technology, the retailer hopes to reduce long queues without removing traditional lanes, while keeping pace with similar systems used by competitors such as Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
