Trump criticises political opponents and Robert De Niro after State of the Union

Date:

Donald Trump issued a series of remarks on the social media platform Truth Social following his State of the Union address, criticising several political opponents and public figures. In the posts, he targeted Democratic congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, both American citizens, after they interrupted his speech in the House chamber.

The comments also referenced actor Robert De Niro, who had earlier delivered a speech criticising the president at an event held before the address. De Niro, a longstanding critic of Trump, argued that the United States must defend democratic institutions and warned that political vigilance was necessary. He also appeared on a political programme where he expressed concerns about the country’s future direction.

Trump responded online by strongly criticising De Niro and reiterating his attacks on the two Democratic representatives. His posts contained personal remarks directed at the actor as well as suggestions that his critics were acting irresponsibly. The exchange highlighted ongoing tensions between the president and a number of prominent figures in politics and the entertainment industry.

Separate opinion polling conducted by Reuters and Ipsos suggested that a majority of Americans believe the country’s political leadership is too old. The survey also indicated that a significant share of respondents viewed Trump as having become more erratic with age, while a spokesman for the White House dismissed the findings as politically motivated narratives.
