Vernon Kay has revealed a dramatic change in appearance after cutting off his trademark long hair. The radio presenter shared a photograph on Instagram showing a much shorter style, jokingly referring to it as a “new lid”. The post prompted widespread reaction from followers, many of whom praised him for embracing his natural grey hair and said the change suited him.

The decision follows Kay’s previous openness about what he has described as “age anxiety”. Speaking in 2023 during a Loose Men panel on ITV, he reflected candidly on the physical changes that come with ageing and the pressures men place on themselves to maintain their appearance. He argued that age should not be used as an excuse to neglect health, while also acknowledging concerns about greying hair, thinning and physical wear and tear.
Kay also spoke at the time about balancing an active lifestyle with the realities of getting older, noting that while his interests have remained largely unchanged, his body has not. He stressed that he avoids cosmetic procedures and heavy drinking, instead trying to stay physically fit where possible, despite ongoing issues such as sciatica.

The shift in outlook appears to echo the perspective of his wife, Tess Daly, who has recently spoken about what she describes as a “second act” in midlife. Following her departure from Strictly Come Dancing, Daly has said she feels a renewed sense of purpose, highlighting a wider trend of women in their fifties continuing to thrive professionally rather than slowing down.
