A popular restaurant in Cardiff has introduced half-price daily specials, with main courses available for just £10, considerably less than typical local prices. The offer, originally planned for January, has now been extended into February. The decision comes as food prices continue to rise across the UK, from supermarkets to Michelin-starred restaurants, yet the restaurant has chosen to reduce rather than increase its prices.

Thomas, run by Tom Simmons in the Pontcanna area, has shifted from fine dining to a brasserie-style menu, maintaining a high-end approach. Simmons explained that the change was necessary as fewer people are able to spend on destination restaurants. Rather than raising prices to offset lower footfall, he decided to make the restaurant more accessible, describing the alternative as “backing yourself into a corner.”
The brasserie menu remains premium, with dishes such as short rib and suet pudding with mash at £23 and fillet steak at £42. Each day also features a special, normally £20 per person, now available at £10 during lunchtime. Specials include steak frites on Monday, beef wellington on Wednesday, BBQ butter chicken curry on Thursday, and fish pie on Friday, among others.

Customers have responded positively to the offering, with diners praising both the quality and presentation. Starters such as tuna carpaccio with avocado and truffle ponzu, or 12-hour pork belly with cider jus, have been described as sensational, while mains and desserts maintain the restaurant’s high standards. Simmons hopes the pricing and menu changes will make the restaurant welcoming to a broader audience, including local residents seeking both quality and value.
