Ethan Hawke reflects on power, fear and freedom in America

Date:

Ethan Hawke has suggested that Donald Trump’s presidency may be forcing Americans to better understand the concept of oligarchy. Speaking to Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor said the political moment has clarified ideas that once felt abstract, particularly for younger generations who previously dismissed warnings about economic and political concentration at the top.

Hawke argued that the current climate has revealed the meaning of lost freedoms, even if that realisation has come at a high cost. He noted that the experience has made people more aware of how power operates, adding that he wished such lessons did not require freedoms to be diminished in order to be recognised.

The actor also described a growing sense of unease around public expression, saying he has felt a level of caution in recent years that he had not experienced before. According to Hawke, this atmosphere of fear contrasts sharply with the ideals of artistic freedom he once associated with life in the United States.

While Hawke avoided political discussion during a recent appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, he was more direct at Sundance, describing Trump’s influence in terms he associated with modern forms of fascism. He emphasised that contemporary authoritarianism differs from historical examples, shaped instead by social media, propaganda and new forms of power, but driven by familiar forces of greed and oppression.
