Gmail to scrap key email integration tools in 2026, affecting millions of users

Date:

A low-profile but important change is on the way for millions of Gmail users who rely on the platform to manage multiple email accounts. From January 2026, Google will withdraw two long-standing features that have helped users centralise third-party mailboxes within Gmail.

The company has confirmed that support for Gmailify and the POP3 email retrieval protocol will be discontinued. As a result, users who currently pull messages from external services such as Yahoo or Outlook into Gmail will need to make alternative arrangements if they wish to continue receiving those emails.

Gmailify allowed third-party accounts to be linked directly to Gmail, bringing with it familiar features such as spam filtering, inbox categories, enhanced search and push notifications. These tools, which many users considered essential, will be removed entirely.

At the same time, Gmail will end support for POP3, the older protocol that enabled emails from external accounts to be automatically fetched into a Gmail inbox. Once this change takes effect, ongoing synchronisation of messages from other providers will no longer be possible via this method.

Google is encouraging users to switch to IMAP, a more modern protocol that remains supported and allows emails to be accessed directly on devices such as smartphones through the Gmail app. However, IMAP connections will not benefit from Gmail’s additional features, including advanced spam protection and automatic categorisation. As an alternative, Google advises setting up automatic email forwarding with external providers. This approach ensures new messages continue to arrive in Gmail, even though full integration and synchronisation will no longer be available.

Users can check whether they are affected by visiting Gmail’s settings, selecting the Accounts and Import tab, and reviewing any addresses listed under “Check mail from other accounts”. Any accounts still connected via POP3 will require action ahead of the 2026 deadline. Google has warned users to update their settings promptly. While previously imported emails will remain accessible, and one-off imports of messages or contacts will still be possible, the seamless, ongoing integration many users rely on will soon be a thing of the past.
